Made for Walking

From a design idea to a niche world player.

Trionic's story doesn't begin with a rollator. It begins with a designer who walked toward engineering — and a stubborn idea that the most ignored product in mobility deserved to be reinvented.

Trionic began with a creator who moved toward technology. Johan Kuikka first trained as a graphic designer, ran a small advertising agency and worked at a printing house.

He spent a year at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, then earned a business degree at Södertörn University — on a programme called "Economics, Technology and Design" — before completing a mechanical engineering degree at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, specialising in product design. It was at KTH that he met Stefan Kindberg, who would become his co-inventor and business partner.

The timeline

Twenty years, one stubborn idea.

From a seven-week summer studio to roughly 2,700 rollators a year across Europe, Australia and North America — here's how it happened, milestone by milestone.

Summer 2004The spark

Seven students, seven weeks, seven projects

At Swedish Industrial Design's "summer design office," seven students spent seven weeks on seven projects themed around fall prevention — tied to the goal of making Sweden accessible to all by 2010.

Johan and Stefan landed on the observation that became the company's foundation stone: the rollator had barely evolved in decades.

The insightNobody wanted one

A stigmatised, price-pressed product

The rollator was stigmatised — "you instantly feel fifteen years older." It was squeezed by public procurement where the cheapest option always won, and it completely lacked the desire and engineering culture that drives cycling or running gear.

"Nobody wanted a rollator — but everyone who got one didn't want to be without it."
The first buildMade for an athlete

Built for a 19-year-old runner

The first design was made for a 19-year-old track athlete who couldn't run with an ordinary rollator because the wheels wobbled. The idea of making something sporty and desirable — inspired by three-wheeled prams, golf and cycling — shaped the whole product.

Three-wheel frame Always grounded Can't tip
The breakthroughThe climbing wheel

A patent built on a lowered axle

Two technical choices proved decisive: a three-wheel frame that always keeps ground contact and cannot tip, and a climbing front wheel that Johan and Stefan developed and patented themselves.

The heart of the patent was the lowered axle, which creates a lifting force — so it takes only a fraction of the effort to get over edges and thresholds.

A formative lessonAge is irrelevant

"Just for old people"

At an exhibition in Haninge Art Hall, a 90-year-old man dismissed the product — "that's only for the elderly" — and walked off. The conclusion was the opposite: age is irrelevant. It's about the will to do things, whether you're 65 or 93.

"In your head, you never get older than 26."
2005Prizes & capital

Design award, then Venture Cup

An aluminium design prize (with SAPA) financed the first real prototype, and fourth place in Venture Cup 2005 gave the business plan real weight.

2006Trionic is founded

A company, capitalised

The limited company was founded together with first financier Torbjörn Ek, then capitalised with bank loans, Industrifonden and six private investors.

~2008The Veloped launches

Not a rollator — the alternative

The product launched at scale around 2008. The name "Veloped" was chosen deliberately to avoid calling it a "rollator" — it was positioned instead as the alternative to one. Alongside it they built a four-wheel model with synchronised steering.

The wallThe model breaks

A Porsche in a Lada showroom

Trionic built up around fifteen distributors across Europe via trade fairs — but the products didn't sell through in stores. At €800–1,000 against an ordinary rollator's €59–100, the leap was simply too big.

"Like trying to sell a Porsche in a Lada shop."
2011–2012Near the end

Thrown out of the factory

The crisis peaked when their Malaysian factory — shared with a competitor — was forced to choose, and dropped Trionic. Capital ran dry, the board resigned and recommended closure.

Johan took a day job from 2011 to 2015 while Stefan handled engineering and relocated manufacturing, with co-owner Nils financing the transition.

~2013The turnaround

Direct to the customer

Two decisions turned it around. Manufacturing moved to China — today the product is assembled in a contracted factory and finished with textile, brakes and grips in Uppsala. And, crucially, around 2013 Trionic switched to e-commerce and sold directly to the end customer.

It meant terminating every distributor and starting over — but now they reached customers directly, and the enthusiastic response, reviews and spontaneous thank-you letters became both fuel and marketing.

Small, stable, growing

Trionic is a small but stable company that has grown organically by roughly 20–30% a year, selling around 2,500–2,700 units annually. Sweden remains hard because of its procurement system, so the weight sits on Germany, the UK and the rest of Europe — with sellers in Australia, the USA and Canada too.

The team is three people. Stefan now works remotely from the French Alps: he owns manufacturing and production, Johan owns marketing, design and sales.

The engineering

The idea that does the work.

Two patents-worth of thinking sit under every Trionic: a tripod that can't tip, and a front wheel that lifts itself over the obstacle instead of slamming into it.

Lifting force Lowered axle

The lowered axle

On an ordinary wheel the axle sits at the geometric centre. Trionic dropped it. That offset turns forward push into an upward lift at the obstacle, so the wheel climbs the kerb instead of stalling against it — and the user supplies only a fraction of the force.

Combine it with a three-wheel frame that keeps every wheel on the ground and cannot tip, and you get the thing a corridor rollator never had: confidence on rough, uneven, outdoor ground.

"Had I known how much work it would be, I might have chosen something else — but I regret nothing. The broad knowledge I was forced to build along the way is priceless."

  • Flott bedrift - Flott produkt…
