All-Terrain Rollator Walkers — and Where They Stop

A Trionic all-terrain rollator walker clears obstacles up to 13 cm high — kerbs, roots, rocks — without you lifting anything. That number is the honest edge of what "all-terrain" means. Above it sits a step you have to deal with yourself, and no wheel size changes that.

Most pages in this category imply a walker that goes anywhere. This one tells you where ours stops, because knowing the ceiling is what lets you choose the right model instead of the biggest one.

Where an all-terrain walker stops: 13 cm

The patented Trionic Climbing Wheel is a third wheel that meets the obstacle before the main wheels do and rolls the frame up and over it. Published limit: 13 cm. Standard kerbs, tree roots and rocks fall under that. A flight of stairs or a high doorstep does not.

For stairs, there are two honest answers, and we give both:

  • Lift it. The wheels are quick-release, so the frame comes apart from its wheels in seconds. Wheels off, a Walker frame is roughly 6.5 kg and a Veloped frame roughly 7.7 kg — the difference between an impossible lift and a manageable one.
  • Back it up. Turn around, take the stairs backwards and draw the walker up behind you one step at a time, letting the large rear wheels take each riser. This is the technique physiotherapists teach, and it is why big wheels still help here even though they will not climb on their own.

If you face stairs several times a day, plan for it: many owners keep a second, lighter indoor rollator upstairs rather than carrying one walker up and down.

What makes a rollator truly all-terrain?

Three features separate a genuine all-terrain walker from a standard rollator with slightly larger wheels:

  • Large, shock-absorbing wheels — air-filled (pneumatic) tyres on the Walker 12er/14er and every Veloped soak up shocks the way bicycle tyres do, rolling over cobblestones, gravel and roots without sending every bump to your hands. The Walker 9er uses maintenance-free SuperSoft PU tyres for similar comfort.
  • Wheel diameter — a larger wheel rolls over obstacles more easily. The Walker 12er uses 31 cm wheels; the 14er uses 36 cm. Standard rollators typically use 15–20 cm solid wheels.
  • Steering stability on slopes — on a cross-slope, most rollators pull sideways. The Trionic Walker uses patented Syncro Steering: the two front wheels are mechanically linked to always turn at exactly the same angle, like a car's front axle. The walker tracks straight on any surface, so you are not correcting it every few steps.

Which model for which terrain?

The Walker 14er carries 14-inch (36 cm) pneumatic tyres — the largest fitted to any rollator. The large wheels roll over obstacles that trap smaller wheels, and the air absorbs even heavy impacts. It is the clear choice for forest trails, beaches, farmyards and ground that genuinely challenges a mobility aid.

The Walker 12er, on 12-inch (31 cm) pneumatic tyres, handles most everyday outdoor conditions without the full size of the 14er — cobblestone streets, gravel paths, lawns and park environments, with a comfortable, vibration-free walk.

The Veloped models add the Climbing Wheel, and are the ones to choose if kerbs and single steps are a daily obstacle rather than an occasional one.

Frequently asked questions

Can an all-terrain rollator walker go up stairs?
No — and neither can any other rollator. The Trionic Climbing Wheel takes obstacles up to 13 cm, which covers kerbs, roots and rocks but not a stair riser. For stairs you either lift the walker (roughly 6.5 kg for a Walker frame with the quick-release wheels removed) or turn around and back it up one step at a time. If stairs are a daily obstacle, a second lightweight indoor rollator upstairs is usually the better answer.
Do all-terrain walkers come with a seat?
Yes. Every Trionic Walker and Veloped has a seat, positioned further forward than on a conventional rollator so your legs have room while you walk — a common complaint with seats mounted centrally. On the Veloped the seat also slides, giving extra legroom on longer walks.
What is the difference between an all-terrain rollator and a standard rollator?
A standard rollator uses small, hard wheels (15–20 cm) for smooth indoor floors. An all-terrain rollator uses large pneumatic or SuperSoft tyres — 23 to 36 cm — that absorb shocks and roll over cobblestones, gravel and uneven ground. On real outdoor terrain the difference is immediate.
Can I use an all-terrain walker indoors?
Yes. Large-wheel all-terrain walkers work perfectly indoors — the larger wheels cross thresholds and floor transitions more smoothly, and the soft tyres are quiet on hard floors. The only consideration is width in very narrow doorways. The reverse isn't true: an indoor rollator quickly falls short outdoors.
What wheel size should I choose?
Match wheel size to your roughest regular surface, not the worst one you can imagine. 9″ for mostly indoors with occasional outings. 12″ for everyday pavements, parks and gravel. 14″ for woodland trails, beach and rough ground. A Veloped if kerbs and steps are part of your daily route.
How heavy are all-terrain walkers?
Trionic Walker models weigh about 9.1–9.9 kg and Veloped models about 11.4–12.5 kg (12-inch versions), reflecting their larger wheels and Climbing Wheel. All use a lightweight aluminium frame, and the quick-release wheels let you lift the frame on its own — roughly 6.5 kg (Walker) and 7.7 kg (Veloped).
Are all-terrain walkers foldable for the car?
Yes. All Trionic Walker and Veloped models fold flat and fit in a car boot. The Walker 12er and 14er also feature quick-release wheels for compact storage and air travel.
